Constructing a Smart Optical Network as a Solid Base for 5G Carrying

At the 5G+ Bearer Technology and Industry Conference held during the 2021 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day Conference; FiberHome Tech Expert Ma Jun delivered a keynote speech entitled Constructing a Smart Optical Network as a Solid Base for 5G Carrying.
Ma Jun states that, driven by the development of digital economy, new infrastructure and the Dual Gigabit Network Coordinated Development Action Plan, optical network has formed a solid foundation for the basic information and communication network, and its role has moved from behind the scenes to the stage to support the digitization process of many industries. FiberHome has been leading the development of the industry with the concept and practice of "Smart Optical Network".

"Smart Optical Network" development concept and construction ideas have become the consensus of the industry
On 2019 May 17th the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day, FiberHome was the first in the industry to launch the Smart Optical Network White Paper. FiberHome’s Smart Optical Network focuses on the development and evolution of the optical network, and has proposed the four core concepts of "Ubiquitous, Ultra-broadband, Open, and On-demand". In recent years, the development and construction of optical networks have been widely accepted and fully practiced in the industry.

During the 2020 pandemic, FiberHome released the "Smart Optical Network 2.0" via the Internet. Smart Optical Network adopts "NaaS (Network as Business, Network as Service)" as its overall goal, transport capacity, costumer experience, and operation upgrade as effective means to enhance value and ultimately serving thousands of industries.

Extensive application and practice of "Smart Optical Network"
Since the four core concepts of “Ubiquitous, Ultra-wide, Open, and On-demand” of Smart Optical Network were proposed, they have gradually been widely accepted in the industry during the development and construction of optical networks and have been fully tested in practice.

Ubiquitous: The packet enhanced OTN meets the current needs of operators for multi-service access and bearing in the optical transport network. In the future, as the OSU technology and industry chain becomes mature, the multi-service bearing capacity will be further improved. Under the trend of cloud-network convergence, ubiquitous optical network is the key to open network resources and capabilities to users in order to enhance the values of the network.

Ultra-broadband: The continuous evolution and deployment of over 100G needs to consider the expansion of C-band and C+L-band spectrum resources to meet the continuous increase in capacity. FiberHome's recent increase and application of 200G, 400G, 800G single channel rate and the practical application of the band and C+L band spectrum expansion has been at the forefront of the industry.

Open: The openness of the network includes the disaggregation of the equipment level and the openness of network capabilities to users. From the recent practice government and enterprise private networks of various operators in the province, the regional division is carried out at the forwarding level, and the SDN controller is used at the management and control level. The layered "gray box" solution not only realizes the end-to-end characteristics of services, but also avoids the excessive closure and openness of the network. It is the best way to realize the current network construction. The focus of the future is to further open network resources and capabilities to users through AI and other means to maximize network value.
On-demand: Intelligence is an important manifestation of the on-demand characteristics of optical networks. Optical network intelligence includes equipment layer and network layer intelligence. Optical layer digitization is the basis for equipment to load AI. The intelligence of the network will be reflected in the full life cycle of "planning, construction, maintenance, optimization, and analysis", and will be the first to be applied in the field of operation and maintenance.

Future-oriented Smart Optical Network Continues to Evolve
In the future, with the development of optical networks, the further development of cloud computing and computing power networks. Smart Optical Networks will aim at the coordinated development of heterogeneous networks to further build ubiquitous optical networks, and realize cloud-network collaboration and computing networks integration to fully meet the needs of sustainable development in the post-5G era.

Ubiquitous Optical Network:
Information and communication infrastructure "solid foundation": provide large-capacity, highly reliable connections.
The boundary is still expanding, and the extension continues to develop: the future will evolve towards "integration of land, sea, space, and earth".

Computing network integration:
New business model: a composite business model of "connection + computing + intelligent integration".
The goal of the computing power network: the consistency of user experience + flexible and dynamic deployment of services.

Finally, Ma Jun concluded: Smart Optical Network has broad development space and will also lead the development of optical communication industry into a new era.
