"Joyful Rendezvous upon Pure Ice and Snow", the 24th Winter Olympic Games will be jointly held in Beijing and Zhangjiakou from February 4 to February 20, 2022. Athletes from all over the world will compete in 7 major events and 102 contests during the Games. The Winter Olympics will undoubtedly become the spotlight of the world. A large number of live streaming, videos and news reports will be spreading around the world through communication networks. Unblocked communication network during the event will directly affect the success of the Games.
In view of a large network traffic demand, countless optical cables and a complex environment in Winter Olympics venues and the challenges in traditional maintenance methods of positioning failure, repairing difficulties and time-consuming, it would arouse baneful influence to the normal progress of events once a major network failure occurs. As the only official communication service partner for the Games, China Unicom is deeply aware of the great responsibility.
To ensure stable networks during the Winter Olympics, Beijing Unicom and FiberHome have co-launched the special optical cable test and maintenance cooperation on the network convergence for the 2022 Winter Olympics. Through FiberHome's IFMS-P optical cable online monitoring system, the monitoring of 25 convergent network optical cable routes between relevant venues can be realized at a reasonable cost, and the abnormal conditions of the physical characteristics of the optical cable can be sensed in real time, such as the increase of cable attenuation or fiber cuts.
Through integration of OTDR(optical time-domain reflectometer) and OPM (optical power monitoring), the IFMS-P optical cable online monitoring system features:
Fiber channel 7×24-hour real-time online monitoring.
Optical fiber loss and optical fiber performance analysis for monitoring and alarm processing.
Analysis of cable attenuation and degradation trends, early warning and active perception.
Historical information comparison and automatic determination of faulty cable.
Accurate positioning of distance and physical location of fault point with GIS map.
Owing to the above methods, once an abnormality of the optical cable is detected during the Winter Olympics, the system will obtain the fault information as soon as possible, and locate the fault point through mobile push notification and other means, to ensure the rapid repair of the optical cable.
During the Games, FiberHome will also add two additional sets of optical cable online monitoring equipment in Beijing and Zhangjiakou and at the same time arrange designated teams to be stationed in downtown Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou. In the event of a failure, the technical support team can quickly respond to on-site treatment or replacement of spare parts to ensure the normal operation of the optical cable monitoring system.
The opening of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics is no more than 50 days away; Beijing Unicom and FiberHome are racing against time to deploy the online optical fiber monitoring system to ensure the success of the Games by leveraging the strengths of science and technology. At the appointed time, we will behold the passions and glories of the athletes during the Winter Olympics.
